In 1916, a 14.5-mile tunnel was blasted through the Ko'olau Mountains to divert windward water to central O'ahu sugar plantations. The fight to return that water continues today.
The US Navy stored 180 million gallons of jet fuel in underground tanks 100 feet above O'ahu's main aquifer. In 2021, it leaked into the drinking water of 93,000 people.
